Black Widow (Latrodectus mactans)
Black Widow Nervous System
The black widow spider, and all spiders for that matter, have a nervous system similar to that of humans, but far less complex. The spiders do have a brain which is positioned above the digestive system and is called the supraoesophageal ganglion. This is responsible for reading and interpreting the information received from the sensory organs, most importantly the eyes. Below the digestive system and connected to the brain is the suboesophageal ganglion. This ganglion is responsible for controlling the legs and palps of the spider. |
